Go Back And Link Old Posts

By Michael James J

With out much thought we write a new post, maybe add some links current to what we are writing about, publish it, and then forget about it moving on to the next post. What you don’t realize is how many links from past posts could be linked up with new posts and vice versa.

A daily practice you as a blogger should adapt is to Go Back And Link Old Posts. You need to treat them with as much thought and care as a new post if not more so. Those old posts helped you get to the point your are at now and can be built upon to create a more useful and informative site.

I can hear the questions now, in fact I was just physically asked the question buy a client of mine. But why? What are the benefits of all this work? And yes it is work. I’ll give you some very important reasons why doing this is of such a benefit.
Why Go Back And Add Links To Old Posts?

Here I will give you a few reasons or tips on why this is a good practice.

1. Something Old Something New. More then likely a post you had written in the past has something related to a post you just wrote. This is added information for your readers. Link both of these posts to each other so that you are actually providing twice as much information then just your one post.

2. Brings An Old Post Back To Life. Eventually a post will loose some life in search engines. They just won’t come and visit anymore. By adding new info or a new link, the search engines will realize there is something new to see there and will pay attention to it again reviving a slumbering post.

3. Drives Traffic. By linking an old post to a new one it will help to drive traffic to that old post as well. Same with an old post that may have a high page rank. Link that old one to a new post and traffic from the old but high page rank post will go to that new post you wrote.

4. Keeps Viewers. Every blogger want this. If most every page you have, links to another post, your viewers will want to keep on going reading from post to post. This keeps them at your site and will help to keep them coming back.

5. SEO Friendly. Internal linking is one of the keys when it comes to search engine optimization. We all know that external links benefit our site but even the internal links are of help. The engines like and reward linking from within your site. Just don’t over link. It will make the page look messy and have search engines saying “Really? Are you serious?”
Get Linking

If you have a large number of posts this can seem quite the task but if you’ve used your tags and categories properly this can go a long way towards helping to figure it out. You could also just break out pen and paper and skim threw your old posts making notes on what you wrote and what can be linked. It’s definitely work but work worth doing as you and your site will be rewarded for your efforts.
