What Is Technorati
By Michael James J
With as much information as there is out there on the popular site Technorati, there is still confusion as to what it is, how it works, and why you should be using it. Just this past weekend I received several emails with questions regarding it. What this told me is that more explaining needed to be done, so I decided to write a two part series, “What Is Technorati” and “How Can I Increase My Technorati Ranks”. In this, Part One, I will give you the basics on What Technorati is about. What Is Technorati? Technorati is a search engine that searches and indexes blogs, much like Google or Yahoo does. As of this writing Technorati tracks nearly 113 million blogs and their 1.6million average updates per day. What Are Technorati Tags? Technorati tags are the labels that you assign to a post so that Technorati can understand what that particular post is about. For those who use Wordpress as your blogging platform, this is done using Simple Tags or similar plugin. Be sure to tag your posts, and use just a few that best describe that post. Too many tags can hurt your rankings. What Is A Technorati Fan or Favorite? Technorati created the “Favorite” option as a way to manage your favorite sites from within their site. Once you have added a site as a favorite you become a fan of that site. But the “Favorite” option goes further then that, it is also a way to market your site. Which will be explained more in part two. What Is Technorati Authority? Technorati authority is a point based system. When another blog links to your blog you earn a Technorati Authority point. If that same blog links to you again, you still only get one point (one point per blog). On top of that, it is only good for six months. After six months you lose that point, unless a new link is created by that blog again, to start a new six month period. So your Authority will fluctuate. This ranking system is an important component when it comes to advertising, as the better ranks the better paying the ads. How Do I Use Technorati? To start using Technorati sign up here, it’s free to use. Once you’ve signed up you need to “Claim Your Blog”. It’s not always a smooth process, many have problems with claiming. If you do have problems, email Technorati and they can fix it for you. Once you are all setup you can add badges to your site so readers can click on them and add you and your blog as a favorite, and start linking to you. If you have further questions feel free to comment or contact me and I will do my best to answer those questions. …..Technorati Part Two - How To Increase My Technorati Ranks Watch for this post on how to increase your ranks.
